LANIMA FOUNDER DEBBI SYMES
IS FINDING BEAUTY THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH WOMEN
The genesis of LANIMA’s kindred souled connection to Rwandan women began through a serendipitous encounter with Humanity Unified, a New York based non-profit that empowers vulnerable populations of women around the globe through economic opportunity. Founder Debbi Symes, immediately drawn to its powerful mission, conceived an idea to source production of LANIMA’s Conscious Clutch in Rwanda. The 6-month project concluded with Symes taking a 12-day trip to Rwanda, where she could finally meet and bond with her kindred souled sisters—celebrating the beauty of self-sustainment and the beginning of a blossoming relationship.
Who Made It
The cooperative Debbi engaged with was created as result of a multi-year initiative by Aspire Rwanda, an organization that elevates women in a post-genocide environment with entrepreneurship skills, training and, crucially, the motivation necessary to not only survive, but to thrive. The Tujembere Cooperative, which supports over 130 women in Kigali, has become a source of friendship and inspiration for women who lost, in some cases, everything: their families, land, livestock and until recently, hope.
